Get Out There, SOCers! (Not-To-Be-Missed Networking Opportunities)

It can’t be repeated too many times: networking is a vital part of career building. There are many ways to cultivate relationships on your way to success; one important one is making face-time with professionals in your chosen field (we’ve even provided tips for the introverted networker in a previous post).

In addition to the many events organized by the Career Center (such as early January’s NYC Site visit trip where students were able to rub elbows with CBS Early Show anchors Harry Smith and Julie Chen, shown above; or the annual SOC Student-Alumni Networking Reception, coming up on March 2nd), it’s important to keep tabs on key professional associations in your industry. We at the Career Center like to help you do that, and want to bring two upcoming campus-meets-the-real-world events to your attention:

First: A January 30th PRSSA workshop for Public Comm students, 5 to 7 p.m. in Butler Boardroom featuring the CEO of Powell Tate and a representative from the UN’s Nothing But Nets Campaign. $10 for non members $5 for members. RSVP to, an bring your fee to the event.

Then: Our annual Career Center and Women in Film and Video (WIFV) co-sponsored Resume Swap on February 9th, a great opportunity to get practical feedback and talk at length with experts in the field. This year it will be held downtown near Farragut North, but AU students still get the member rate of $5 to attend.  Be sure to RSVP!
