Strategizing the Job & Internship Fair

The countdown to the Spring 2011 Job and Internship Fair is on, and now is the time to start preparing your strategy.

If you’ve attended the fair before, you know that it’s easy to wander aimlessly among the various employer booths in Bender Arena. While this can be good for general information gathering, it’s probably not the most efficient approach to meeting employers that you most want to work for.

Coming into the fair with a good strategy can drastically improve your experience. The Career Center website links to a list of employers attending the fair. Scanning this in advance allows you to select the most appropriate employers for you by position type, job function and degree level.

I’d suggest creating a targeted list of 5-10 employers and researching each organization in advance of the fair. Visit these targeted employers first when you arrive to ensure that you make contact with the recruiters you most want to speak with. Impress these recruiters with your knowledge of their organization and focus the conversation on how your skills and interests might fit into an internship or job. If you have extra time, visit other employers that might have opportunities of interest to you. Be sure to check the registration list again just before the fair to see the final list of employers and adjust your targeted booths as needed.

What is your strategy for the Job and Internship Fair? Which employers are you targeting?
