Sad news from New York: The United Nations Association of the USA (UN-USA) — which has raised awareness and support for the UN since its founding more than 60 years ago — has run out of funds and has ceased operations . UN-USA had been an attractive employer for internationally-focused internships. Its Board of Directors has proposed a merger with the DC-based UN Foundation, but the Foundation has declined comment on the situation.

How good a Googler are you? Employers increasingly look to hire people for internships and entry-level jobs who have solid fundamental research skills — including Internet research. But a new study from Northwestern University says many college students are unsophisticated users of Google and other search engines. Think about it — and consider whether you need to enhance your Search Engine IQ.
In May 2010, the IRS began revoking the tax-exempt status for 300,000 charities that have failed to file mandatory non-profit tax returns for three straight years, according to charity watchdog Guidestar.org. While this development will not affect major non-profits, it will put out of business thousands of smaller organizations. As a result, America’s non-profit sector could shrink by a staggering 25%.

The Social Innovation Fund has announced its first round of grantees — 11 non-profit organizations around the nation receiving a total of $50 million grants for programs addressing economic opportunity, health care, youth development and education. The Fund is an initiative enacted under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act as a new way of doing business for the federal government, in order to have greater impact on urgent national challenges.
