  JOURNALISM: Get networked through the Online News Association! If you’re free tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4th, in the evening, take advantage of the fact that AU is  launching one of three new pilot campus ONA chapters nationwide, and hosting the local chapter’s May meetup! Join Meetup.org to get more detailed information, and/or email AU chapter advisor, Prof. David Johnson, at davidj@american.edu.  And take note: ONA will soon be opening registration for its 2010 Annual Conference, which is coming to DC in October, with SOC’s Prof. Amy Eisman as the conference co-chair! Consider joining ONA for the student rate of just $25; registering for the conference as a student member for $150; or volunteering in exchange for daily passes; and/or taking advantage of free student member admission to the conference job fair (not bad!)   This Week: On-Campus Recruiting for SOC Students 

  AARP is back, and looking for spring interns for their print and online media, media relations, etc. Three SOC interns–undergraduate and graduate students–are there this fall, learning from the best in the field, and we have had numerous AARP success stories in semesters past. Don’t miss the AARP Open House and Resume Drop event on Wednesday, October 18th, 6-8 p.m.

  Women and minority students are encourated to attend the T. Howard Foundation information session tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 17th, 5- 6 p.m. The foundation offers a competitive summer program with positions in a wide range of multimedia and entertainment companies.

  Interested in ANY Aspect of TV or Radio? 

  The International Radio and Television Society Foundation has announced that they’re accepting applications for their competitive, all-expenses paid, nine-week Summer 2010 Fellowship program, open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students. The placements for those selected run the gamut from the business side of TV and radio, to national and local television news reporting or production, entertainment TV production, sports show reporting/producing, new media, television programming (pitching, etc.), and commercial advertising production. Applications are due December 1.

  Twenty Tweet-Worthy Facts, Plus Resources and Opportunities for Magazine Lovers 

  Did you know that the top 25 magazines reach more adults and teens than the top 25 prime-time TV programs? Or that magazines  “excel at long-form journalism, superb photography, eye-catching design”?

  These are among The Twenty Tweetable Truths about Magazines posted by the Magazine Publishers of America to promote their industry.  Despite (or perhaps prompted by) the demise of some well-known titles,  magazines are figuring out ways to position themselves to better parlay their niche content and audiences into deep brand loyalty and new income sources.  But that’s for the publishers to work out, and they’ve been working it (see notes from their Magazine Innovation Summit, held earlier this month).

  Atlantic Magazine: Media Talk (and Opportunity) 

  Having left the magazine world, I still got a vicarious thrill a few years ago when The Atlantic magazine moved its base to DC  from Boston. From my current perch as a Career Advisor on campus, it would be grand to see someone from AU (and particularly SOC) land there. For more info on how to make that dream come true, see below**–but also check out the current issue’s two media-related features. One on why the dismal performance of traditional media can’t be blamed on the Internet alone (The Moguls’ New Clothes) and one on the damage done when journalism fails and public communication, at least in the form of ideology-laden “news,” wins  (The Story Behind The Story).

  **Atlantic Media (the magazine’s parent organization) has a fabulous six-month internship in which 25 new interns (juniors, seniors, or recent grads) will focus on either the editorial or business side of media between January and June 2010, and also get a 360-degree perspective and training on modern media in the making. Deadline is 5 p.m. OCTOBER 9th. Sign on to AUCareerWeb, and use the position’s i.d. number (38398) as a keyword to lead you directly to the post.

  Building a Web Portfolio 

  We hope these tips will help SOC students and others get started thinking about and designing professional e-portfolios:
  

  SCOPE OUT THE COMPETITION
  Browse the online portfolios of professionals in your field. What do you like, or dislike? What choices are they making about how they present their work, how they approach the design, what industry jargon they use? You can find pros’ websites/portfolios just by Googling the name of a person whose work you admire, or even the field you’re interested in pursuing. These sites are ubiquitous—which should motivate you even more to create your own!

  SECURE A DOMAIN NAME
  Before you begin to build your site, you can secure a domain name. Even if you’re building on a platform that gives you a ready-made address, you can usually link it to an alias URL that’s easier to remember and connect with your business or your name. One of the most popular places to screen and purchase domain names is http://www.godaddy.com .   Make it short and simple, flexible, and memorable. Often, your name alone is a great choice (unless your name is something like John Smith, and it’s already taken!).
