    Value of Networking & Using LinkedIn 

    Mention the word “networking” and it will send most people running in the other direction. The fear of networking stems from “not knowing how to approach a room full of strangers during an event” or “believing that the recipient of an email request for an informational interview will dub the individual as needy.” Whether in person or through social media sites, networking is the key ingredient to more than 80% of the hires made in the United States.  According to Bob McIntosh on the Recruiting Blog “smart jobseekers attend networking events because they understand that personal networking coupled with online networking will yield better results than spending the majority of their time” on various job boards.

    What is Networking & How Do I Use it Effectively?

    Get Out There, SOCers! (Not-To-Be-Missed Networking Opportunities) 

    It can’t be repeated too many times: networking is a vital part of career building. There are many ways to cultivate relationships on your way to success; one important one is making face-time with professionals in your chosen field (we’ve even provided tips for the introverted networker in a previous post).

    In addition to the many events organized by the Career Center (such as early January’s NYC Site visit trip where students were able to rub elbows with CBS Early Show anchors Harry Smith and Julie Chen, shown above; or the annual SOC Student-Alumni Networking Reception, coming up on March 2nd), it’s important to keep tabs on key professional associations in your industry. We at the Career Center like to help you do that, and want to bring two upcoming campus-meets-the-real-world events to your attention:
