    Sample Resume and Simple Critique

Just to remind us all, every resume can use a little polish, no matter how accomplished the author. Take this resume below. This sample has been forwarded to us by our partners in our resume builder tool, and though it is well-formatted (that’s part of the beauty of a resume builder tool), there are still some issues to address.

There’s no phone in the header, and generally employers still want to contact exciting applicants by phone. “A long time ago” really doesn’t work as a specific date. There’s only one job listed and though that demonstrates dependability and dedication, I wonder if he hasn’t had at least one internship. He lists a Master’s degree. What about on-campus leadership? And aren’t there any new media skills he can list?

I don’t mean to be too bah-humbug. After all, I don’t think he’s really actively seeking new employment. He doesn’t have an account on AU CareerWeb.

      Hi there-

I’m a little late, but I just came across this post. Great points — I’m glad you could use Santa’s resume as a teaching tool 🙂 Thanks for sharing it!

Great points, Francine, and while we’re at it–I’d love to give Santa’s even-truncated work history an overhaul. All he talks about are tasks, what he *did* as opposed to what he *achieved*. He doesn’t quantify, he doesn’t focus on the superlatives. He’s Father Christmas, for goodness sake. How many darn children did his efforts bring joy to, on a reliable annual basis? Come on! We’re talking a lot of digits there! How much did elf productivity improve after launching the elf academy? Dazzle me, Santa; dazzle me… 🙂
