How? Easy. Boost your social media savvy this summer. Maybe you’re on the cutting edge, and only need to keep on plugging. Or maybe you’ve got your Facebook friends, or follow folks on Twitter, and that’s it. That’s a fine start, but likely not enough to get you a job requiring social media skills (or a boost toward other jobs, since so many employers are eager to get new-media-mavens on staff)!

The time is now. Here are some tips:

Browse Mashable.com‘s endless list of How-To Posts, which includes advice on using various social media for the job hunt AND for growing a business or advancing a cause. Then stay on top of other areas of Mashable for the latest word on contact-keeping technology.

For the bare basics about popular platforms and tools, check out this great “In Plain English” animated series, including explanations of social networking, social media, RSS feeds, Twitter searches, Wikis and more (including explanations of Zombies, Presidential Elections, and other random topics, on top of the social media primers).

To get an overview on tools to use, check out Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk (or, for fun, check out Gary’s appearance on MTV’s Hired!)

For great tips on using video online, check out Get Seen by Steve Garfield, and follow him at SteveGarfield.com

Now start browsing, and building on what you already know!

Whether you just started or have been at it for a while, the job search process can really take a toll on your schedule and your nerves. Fortunately, the Career Center has plenty of tools to ease your search. If you’re new to the Career Center, get acquainted with library before coming in with this short video I prepared:

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/10264457 w=549&h=309]

So stop by the Career Resource Library , pick up a free cup of coffee and relax! The following books are sure to help you land a great position.

I’m in a Job Search, Now What?? by Kristen Jacoway
If you’re feeling a little behind on the social media scene – this book is extremely helpful. From perfecting your brand on Google to effective use of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, this guide provides great insights on how to get your name out there to recruiters. Whether you’re a seasoned social media user or just getting started, you’re certain to find something valuable in this resource.

Hello Real World: A Student’s Approach to Great Internships, Co-ops, and Entry Level Positions by Jengyee Liang
Written by a recent college student, this book has great advice for those in their first entry-level job search. The second chapter is all about “The Job Hunt;” the author provides tips on what to include on your resume, choosing the right company, and preparing for an interview. It’s a really quick read and the author clearly relates to what students are going through during a job/internship search!

Grads Take Charge by Kathryn Marion
This book is full of great resources for life after college but the job search section is particularly helpful. It begins with 10 steps to a new job (if it were only that easy!?) then details tips for different types of interviews and gives some great networking tips. The author is great about being direct and giving you all the information you need to get through your first job search.

Also, be sure to check out the Job Search Crash Course on Tuesday, March 23rd from 5m-7pm. There, you’ll get a chance to get job searching advice straight from the recruiters themselves!

Here’s an article called “Social Media Should Rock Your World,” on how easy and important it is to use social media for job hunting, from the perspective of a recruiter.

The same reasons that it works for job hunting are why it works for building a personal brand for your own content, a new business, a nonprofit, etc: Social-networking/New Media/Web 2.o… Whatever you call it, these are the tools for communicating in this day and age, so it’s time to learn them and get sophisticated about them.

Along those lines, a number of school clubs joined with the School of Communication and Kogod School of Business, in partnership with Ogilvy PR Worldwide, to bring self-starting social media expert, wine entrepreneur, and author Gary Vaynerchuk to campus this past week to pass on just that message (along with the message that the new media reality can let us all do what we love and maybe make a profit). Check out his new book (the first chapter’s on the web!)–and/or go the American Observer to see footage of his presentation.

(NOTE: The event is free, but RSVP is required).

Gary Vaynerchuk came into the public eye after transforming his family’s local wine store into a $50 million national biz, and into the nation’s most-turned-to-experts on wine, by creating a video-blog (Wine Library TV) and maximizing the power of social networking. An early and innovative adopter of Twitter and other social media tools, he has become recognized as a sort of guru/prophet of personal and business branding and new media. His new book (check out the first chapter here) is just the first of a series of ten we can expect, for which he received an unprecedented seven-figure advance from Harper Books.

No student studying communications or business—or interested in either—should miss this event.

Editorial Reviews:

“Gary was the first person to push me on the importance of personal brand and transparency – this was months before anyone was talking about it, he’s always two steps ahead of anyone else.” (Kevin Rose, Founder of Digg.com )

“Gary Vaynerchuk has become a walking, talking (and oh, such talking!), webbing and Tweeting example of how believing in what you do and keeping it fun can step up your life in all ways. There is nobody I would rather talk sports with-or wine or life.” (Scott Simon, host of Weekend Edition Saturday on NPR )

“Gary is a force of nature. His authentic, raw passion and caring touches everyone. His insights into social media & his message of opportunity could not be more timely.” (Tony Robbins )

“Anyone looking to supercharge their career should beg, borrow, and steal to learn Gary Vee’s techniques. He reinvented the rules to build a $60-million business from scratch-on his own terms.” (Tim Ferriss, #1 NY Times bestselling author of The 4-Hour Workweek )

“Gary Vaynerchuk is one of those entrepreneurs who has discovered the secret to combining passion with business. He is always an inspiration and always entertaining. You owe it to yourself to read this book!” (Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com )
